How to Make a Bong Out of Everything Imaginable

We’ve all been there:

Stuck without something to smoke with!

So, learning how to make a bong is an essential stoner skill.

It could be as simple as because you forgot your favorite water pipe or as tragic as your favorite bong just shattered into thousands of tiny pieces!

Whatever the reason may be, if you're looking for creative and effective ways to make a bong, then this comprehensive guide will be perfect for you.

How to Make a Water Bottle Bong

The fastest and most convenient way to make a bong will be to make it out of a water bottle.

The possibilities are endless, and it will just boil down to whatever you having lying around that you can use.

I think there are two main ways you can go about making your water bottle bong, the professional way and the janky way.

Method #1) The Professional Way

This works if you're in need of a bong because your favorite glass on glass bong just broke.

As long as your downstem and bowl are still intact you can simply poke a hole the size of your downstem in a water bottle, place the grommet and downstem in the water bottle and smoke away the stress.

You might need to use tape to get a better seal, but this is by and far the best, and healthiest, way of smoking out of a water bottle.

Method #2) The Janky Way

The Janky way requires a lot more creativity and can be done with all kinds of different bottles, bowls and downstems.

Here are the step by step instructions to make the simplest water bottle bong.

And with parts you’re almost guaranteed to have just lying around the house.

Step #1 Round Up the Parts

For this water bottle bong, you are going to need:

Materials Needed

  • A Water Bottle
  • Pen
  • Socket
  • Screen (can be bought for pennies at a head shop or popped out of any sink in your house)
  • Knife
  • Electrical tape (any tape with work fine)

Step #2 Place the Screen Inside the Socket

Since we're using a socket, you need a screen to prevent whatever you are smoking from just falling in the water.

Step #3 Take Apart the Pen

You just need the middle part of the pen, to act as a downstem.

Step #4 Create a Seal

Tape one end of the pen until it is thick enough to have a tight seal when connected to the socket.

If the seal is still not tight enough after you connect the two pieces, then go over the connection spot once with the tape.

Step #5 Cut Your Hole

Next cut a hole in the water bottle.

Be careful, though.

If you apply too much pressure, you can send the knife to the other side of the bottle, ruining the bottle and potentially cutting yourself.

Once I have made my initial cut, I like to make a tiny cut in the middle of the first incision making a little T shape.

Step #6 Just Put it in the Hole Already

Place your newly made downstem in the incision you just made in the bottle.

Step #7 Create a Second Seal

Finally, you want to ensure you have a good seal where the downstem meets the bottle. This can be achieved by using more tape.

Avoid Using Foil

I’m sure you’ve all heard the saying, give a smoker nothing to smoke out of he instantly becomes an engineer…

Well, while that may be true.

Not all things lying around the house are meant to be smoked out of.

For instance, probably the most popular way to make a water bottle bong bowl is to use foil.

This is something you should try and avoid because aluminum foil oxidizes and burns holes in your lungs when heated up.

There are plenty of other great alternatives, though.

You can go with a socket, the end of a coaxial cable cord (TV cord), the tip of a metal pen or even starbursts!

There's a lot of people that would argue both sides of the story.

Some say it’s nothing more than a myth, while some scientist will argue that foil isn’t even safe for food preparation.

If you’re in a pinch, you're in a pinch, but I would try to exhaust all of my other resources before turning to foil.

How to Make a Gravity Bong

If you've ever smoked out of a gravity bong, then you know they can give you some the gnarliest/milkiest rips of smoke known to humans.

If you haven’t yet, then takes notes cause here the ways to make both a plastic gravity bong and a longer lasting glass gravity bong.

How to Make a Plastic Gravity Bong

Plastic gravity bongs are super easy to make and can be made from scratch in just a few minutes.

*We recommend not using foil!

Materials Needed

  • Milk Jug
  • Knife
  • Socket
  • Screen
  • Tape
  • Bucket

Step #1 Cut the bottom off of the milk jug clean off

Cut it off and throw it straight into the recycle bin, because we don’t need it anymore.

Step #2 Place the Screen Inside the Socket

Since we are using a socket, you need a screen to prevent whatever you are smoking from just falling in the water.

Step #3 Cut a Hole in the Lid

You need to cut a hole in the lid big enough for the socket to fit in.

Step #4 Check the Seal

Make sure you have a good seal where you have placed your socket in the lid of the milk jug.

If there isn’t a great seal, seal it up with a little bit of tape.

Step #5 Fillerer Up

Fill the bucket up with enough water to where when you sit the milk just flush to the bottom the water goes up just to the before the top of the jug.

How to Make a Glass Gravity Bong

Glass gravity bongs, while a lot nicer, easier to clean, and longer lasting, are a lot harder to make.

And if not done properly, it can be a dangerous process.

So make sure to protect yourself with fire retardant gloves and clothes, plus a face guard.

I know that makes it sound scary, but it’s a pretty quick and easy process if done properly.

Watch this quick video to get a proper understanding of how to do it.

Materials Needed

  • A Glass Bottle
  • Flat Shoelace
  • Acetone (Nail polish remover works)
  • A Bucket of Ice Water
  • Grill Lighter
  • Personal Protective Equipment

Step #1 Tie Shoelace Around the Base of the Bottle

Make sure to tie it flat, super tight, and wrapped around the base a couple of times.

Step #2 Spray the Shoelace with Acetone

You need the shoelace to be doused in acetone, but try to not get much on the bottle itself.

Also, make sure you get enough on there to where it will burn correctly, but you don’t want too much to where it is dripping as this is a fire hazard.

Step #3 Light it Up

Next light the shoelace on fire. Make sure to hold the bottle away from your body during this step.

Step #4 Let it Burn and Twist

Let the shoelace burn while spinning it for about 30 seconds.

Step #5 Dunk it in the Water

Once the bottle has been heated up, you need to dunk it into the ice water.

This will cause a clean break where the shoelace was due to the rapid drop in temperature.

Pro tip: If you don’t want to play with fire, instead you can take a diamond-tip coring drill bit and drill several holes at the base of a glass bottle.

How to Make a Bong out of a Glass Bottle

I don’t think anyone will argue that glass isn't the best material to smoke out of.

It doesn’t cause any harm to the body, and it doesn’t add any unwanted flavor to your smoke.

So how can you make a bong out of your favorite glass bottle?

Watch the videos below to find out!

*Wear gloves and a glass shield to protect yourself from the glass in the event it breaks.

Method #1) Using a Curved Bottle

Materials Needed

  • Glass bottle
  • Downstem
  • Grommet
  • Drill
  • DIamond
  • Diamond coring bit
  • Water
  • Personal protective equipment

Step #1) Match Up Your Bit to Your Grommet

Make sure the diameter of the inner circle in your grommet matches the exact diameter of your diamond coring bit

Step #2) Drill at a 45° Angle

Don’t try and drill straight into the glass; you need to drill at an angle with the drill bit facing down.

Step #3) Add Water While Drilling the hole

Once you get the drill bit into the glass a bit, start to move the drill down completing the circle.

Apply water to the area you are drilling to keep the area cool.

Step #4) Be Careful Not to Break the Bottle

Don’t apply too much pressure.

If you apply too much pressure, once the bit has made its way through the glass you run the risk of the pressure sending your drill through the bottle

Step #5) Install Grommet and Downstem

Place the grommet in your newly drilled hole, followed by the downstem.

Method #2) Using a Straight Edge Bottle

Materials Needed

  • Glass bottle
  • Downstem
  • Drill
  • Diamond coring bit
  • Water
  • Duct tape
  • Silicone
  • Personal protective equipment

Step #1) Match Up Your Bit to Your Downstem Diameter

Make sure the outside diameter downstem matches the exact diameter of your diamond coring bit.
Step #2)

Apply a couple of layers of duct tape to the area you plan to drill your oblong hole.

Step #3) Drill at a 45° Angle

Don’t try and drill straight into the glass; you need to drill at an angle with the drill bit facing down.

Step #4) Add Water While Drilling the hole

Once you get the drill bit into the glass a bit, start to move the drill down completing the circle.

Apply water to the area you are drilling to keep the area cool.

Step #5)

After the initial hole is drilled remove the duct tape

Step #6)

Use the bottom edge of the drill bit to grind out the bottom of the hole making it oval.

Step #7)

Using the food grade silicone, create a seal where the downstem meets the glass bottle.
